The French learn to value and practice eloquence from a young age. Almost from day one, students are taught to produce plans for their compositions, and are graded on them. The structures change with fashions. Youngsters were once taught to express a progression of ideas. Now they follow a dialectic model of thesis-antithesis-synthesis. If you listen carefully to the French arguing about any topic they all follow this model closely: they present an idea, explain possible objections to it, and then sum up their conclusions. [...] This analytical mode of reasoning is integrated into the entire school corpus.
The thesis abstract or summary is what will be read first, to give an indication of the parameters of the study, its depth and breadth, its context and the scholarly contribution it makes. It may be the basis on which a prospective examiner agrees (or not!) to examine your thesis. It is important that it is written in a concise and focussed manner so that it identifies the salient features of the research, the problem or research question, the approach adopted, and its findings. In general the thesis abstract is about 300 words, and for Monash doctoral theses, no more than 500. (Check the norm in your discipline.)
In the Philippines, an academic thesis is named by the degree, such as bachelor/undergraduate thesis or masteral thesis. However, in Philippine English , the term doctorate is typically replaced with doctoral (as in the case of "doctoral dissertation"), though in official documentation the former is still used. The terms thesis and dissertation are commonly used interchangeably in everyday language yet it generally understood that a thesis refers to bachelor/undergraduate and master academic work while a dissertation is named for doctorate work.
