In an effort to modernize, Yale will no longer use the terms "freshman" and "underclassmen" and will instead adopt gender-neutral terminology, such as "first-year" and "upper-level students." University officials still anticipate students and faculty to use the old terminology, since they're "deeply ingrained in our everyday language and in Yale's history." The new terminology can be found in the Undergraduate Regulations and the First-Year Handbook and is expected to appear in all Yale College's publications and communications by the start of the 2018-2019 academic year. Although I have always thought it vital that our faculty be representative of the nation’s diversity, we are getting to a point in higher education where increasing faculty diversity is an absolute necessity and crucial to the future of our nation. In 2014, for the first time, the nation’s K-12 student population was majority minority. These students are on their way into colleges and universities and we are not prepared for them. Our current faculty lacks expertise in working with students of color and our resistance to diversifying the faculty means that we are not going to be ready any time soon.

Today, affirmative action has lost much judicial support , and public opinion polls on these programs show mixed results . The Supreme Court permits race-conscious admissions policies at colleges and universities only to pursue “diversity” in student populations, not to compensate African Americans for centuries of racially discriminatory public policy. Meanwhile, most minority groups remain underrepresented on college and university campuses, even though most students enrolled at the country’s K-12 public schools are minorities.

I understand that minorities in general are behind in education, but the gap starts prior to high school, or even elementary school at that. Due to low SES, which many minorities struggle with, children’s’ developments are limited. Malnutrition, lack of cognitive stimulation, language development, and even poor health care all contribute to the slow learning ability of minorities. At the age of 3, white children have a vocabulary span of 1000 words, where as, minority children have 500–a five fold gap. Thus, it is no surprise that minorities are behind. What I am struggling to understand is why men are being more affected by this.
